Welcome!

What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a fun popular sport played with a paddle and a lightweight plastic ball on a "miniature tennis court". It is typically played as a doubles game and is enjoyed by a wide range of people: men, women, young (8) and old (90's) with all levels of fitness and athleticism. The game is structured so that you can play and enjoy regardless of height, strength, fitness/endurance, mobility, agility, and speed. It's easy to learn the basics even if you have no prior experience with paddle or racquet sports!

Why is Pickleball so Popular?

  • It's easy to learn and easy on your body

  • It's a social activity that allows you to enjoy time outdoors

  • It offers exercise, strategy and competition

  • It is a low-cost sport

  • It is fun to play!

Six pickleball courts with four players each fit into the space of two tennis courts with two players each. So instead of 4 tennis players reserving court time, 24+ pickleballers drop in to all play together! The higher density of pickleball courts and the shorter game helps explain why pickleball is much more social than tennis.

Where and When is Pickleball Played?

In many countries, but particularly here in the USA. It started near Seattle, WA but is now found all around the country; especially in states with nice weather like Arizona, California, Florida and Texas.  Madison, WI is recognized nationwide for its strong and rapidly growing pickleball community!

During our cold winters, many of us play at indoor facilities. Other brave souls try to keep some outdoor courts clear of snow and ice so we may continue to play outside through winter! Still others choose an easier method to play through winter: they migrate to warmer climates! Once spring hits, we all catch pickleball fever.

There are many public (city-managed) pickleball courts in our area plus some private commercial courts. When you're ready, the Resources page will guide you to courts.

How Can I Try Pickleball?

Two great ways to try pickleball without even buying a paddle or ball are:

  • Check the Resources page to look for lessons offered by certified pickleball instructors.

  • Invest in basic equipment head to a court (do you need a reservation?) to experiment. You'll need court shoes (not running shoes!) and you should look over the rules or watch a video or bring a friend that already knows how to play.

I Want More!

Once you know the basics, play with others to improve your skills. The web has tons of videos to help you along your way. You might even want to take professional lessons or join a league. Just remember to get out there to play and have fun!
